What is the new low frequency sounder requirement?

NFPA 72 has initiated a code change to the 2010 edition that will require that certain new sleeping areas utilize a low frequency sounder with a 520 Hz (+/- 10%) square wave. This new requirement is located in Section 18.4.5: Sleeping Area Requirements.

Will this requirement also be in effect in the 2013 edition of NFPA 72?

Yes, the requirements are still in effect in the 2013 edition of NFPA 72.

When is the compliance date for low frequency sounder installations?

January 1, 2014

Why has this code change been implemented?

The intent of this low frequency tone is to accommodate occupants in sleeping rooms with mild to severe hearing loss. This new requirement is based on a series of research studies funded by NFPA that concluded that a low frequency tone, around 520 Hz, is more effective at waking sleeping individuals, including those with mild-to-severe hearing loss.

Where does the code apply?

The requirement applies to new commercial sleeping spaces. Some specific applications include:

− Hotels/Motels
− Retirement/Assisted living facilities
− College/University dormitories
− Apartments/Condominiums

Are the low frequency sounders required for only handicapped rooms in hotels?

No, the intent of the code is to require them in every sleeping room. The 2013 verbiage was modified slightly to clarify that low frequency appliances are only required in sleeping areas.

Are the low frequency sounders required for retrofit applications?

No, the intent of the code is to require the installation of the low frequency sounders only in new buildings.

Are low frequency sounders also required in the hallways of the sleeping areas?

No, the intent of the code is for the low frequency sounders to only be installed in designated sleeping areas.

How can I meet this new requirement?

System Sensor has developed a new product offering similar to the wall version of our SpectrAlert Advance Horns and Horn Strobes that provides the required low frequency sound.

Specific features of the new devices include the following:

− Compatibility for wall or ceiling applications
− Red and white models
− 135, 150, 177, 185 cd
− T3, continuous, and coded tones
− 12/24 V DC/FWR
− Fully synchronizable
− UL, FM and CSFM approved

Please follow manufacturer instructions and your local building/code regulations for the use and installation of any audible visible notification devices.
